Darling Sophie,

Face Cleansing is a big part of a good skincare routine and in the 1950's I mostly used Liquid paraffin to remove my heavy stage make up, but on my days off I loved trying different gentler cleanser. Make your cleanser as you need it because it will not last long or be as effective if you store it.

It is important to cleanse in the evening before bed. For a deep clean whilst helping to balance the skin use an oil based cleanser.

• Tip half a tablespoonful of oil into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together to warm the oil, then smooth it all over your face and neck and chest.

• Massage the oil well into your skin, it will remove makeup, grim, flaky skin and impurities.

• Massage using a firm pressure slowly across the face in outward strokes. Do this six times. Then do circular motions over open pores and the cheeks. Then massage the brow with overlapping circular motions starting at the middle of the forehead. Lastly massage the chest and neck areas with upwards strokes.

Take your time and focus on your problem areas. You want the oil to work into your pores so that blackheads and impurities can be dissolved and steamed away.

• Then soak a facecloth in clean, hot as is comfortable for your hands water. The water will be warm enough to open your pores and help dislodge the oil. Then splash with cool water to close your pores. Place the facecloth over your face and leave it there until it cools. Wipe the oil gently away and rinse the cloth well in hot water. Repeat again, then tap skin dry.

If your skin feels tight at all, use a tiny drop of your oil, rub it between your damp palms and pat gently onto your damp skin, then gently massage, you should now have a good healthy glowing complexion.
